We had a blast hosting our Box Making Workshop as part of Design Week RI 2019! The design community in Rhode Island is world class, with makers from countless disciplines calling the Ocean State their home.
Helmed by Design x RI, a statewide organization dedicated to fostering design in Rhode Island, Design Week RI is a comprehensive ten days of programming for designers to meet, learn, and celebrate.
This year, Taylor Box was lucky enough to host our own Lunch & Learn event: a custom Box Making Workshop right on our factory floor!
Our Box Making Workshop gave local creatives an in-depth, hands on look at packaging design. Senior Designer Ken Byrne kicked off the even with an overview of the finer points of the packaging design process as guests munched on lunch.
Next, we put our eager guests to work. Along with veteran Packaging Specialist Rachel Gagne and the all-stars of our Design Department – Ken Byrne, Nancy Correia, Ali Garcia, and John Romano – guests constructed their own custom boxes from scratch.
They taped, they glued, they sliced and diced and learned what it takes to make a rigid paperboard box by hand.
(Spoiler: It’s not as easy at it looks!)
Our friends at Ecological Fibers generously collaborated with us to make this event a success. Ecological supplied a plethora of vibrantly colored, decadently textured papers for our guests to choose from. And besides spectacular quality, all of Ecological’s paper is environmentally sustainable.
By the end of the afternoon, guests left Taylor Box with their very own handmade custom box!
A huge thank you to Design x RI for organizing this event, to Bill Henry and Ecological Fibers for their unwavering support, and to Bill Parmentier for his incredible photography! (You can check out more of Bill’s work here)
But most of all, thank you to everyone who participated in our Box Making Workshop! We’re so glad we could provide a fun, educational afternoon to Rhode Island designers and creatives. Here’s to Design Week RI 2020!
